The F-1 student visa is the most common visa type for international students pursuing academic studies in the US. This guide covers the entire process from acceptance to visa approval.

Prerequisites

1. **SEVP-Approved School** - Must be accepted by a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-approved school - School must provide Form I-20 2. **Financial Capability** - Proof of sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses - Financial documents must be verifiable
3. **Strong Ties to Home Country** - Evidence you will return home after studies - Family, property, job prospects in home country

Required Documents

1. **Form I-20** - Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status - Provided by your US school after acceptance
2. **DS-160 Confirmation** - Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application confirmation page - Barcode required for interview
3. **Valid Passport** - Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond intended period of stay

Application Process

Step 1: Pay SEVIS Fee Pay the I-901 SEVIS fee online and print receipt.
Step 2: Complete DS-160 Fill out the online nonimmigrant visa application form.
Step 3: Pay MRV Fee Pay the visa application fee and save receipt.
Step 4: Schedule Interview Book appointment at US Embassy or Consulate in home country.
Step 5: Prepare for Interview Gather all documents and practice interview questions.
Step 6: Attend Interview Be prepared to demonstrate nonimmigrant intent.

- SEVIS fee: $350 for F-1 visa - Must be paid before visa interview - Payment receipt valid for one year
